How to Write for Children and Young Adults

Are you working on a picture book or novel for children or young
adults or do you have an idea for one? In this workshop with award-winning
children's and young adult book author Denise Vega, evaluate what
is currently published, understand picture book and novel structure,
analyze existing works, and explore various writing techniques
such as “show don’t tell.” If you have something
you’re working on, bring it! The majority of this workshop
focuses on good writing techniques for both picture books and novels,
with some time at the end to discuss how to submit a manuscript
for possible publication and other “getting published” topics.
Note that this course does not cover self-publishing.
Denise Vega is a published, award-winning author and the Co-Regional
Advisor for the Rocky Mountain Chapter of the Society of Children’s
Book Writers and Illustrators. Her books include the young adult

a MFA in Poetry from the University of Iowa and a Ph.D. in literature
and creative writing from the University of Denver. Her poetry
and nonfiction have been published in numerous national journals
and magazines and has also published children’s poetry and
stories. A faculty member for Arapahoe Community College, she is
also on faculty for Ashland University’s low residency MFA
program in Poetry and Creative Non Fiction.
