Hooked on Crocheting!

“ Hook on” as a beginner or “wanna-be” expert. Gain tips, knowledge and crochet creativity while you relax and meet new crochet friends. Practice yarns and crochet hooks are provided for first-timers or bring your own special project. Left-handers are welcome.
Shelly Stephens has taught men and women to initiate and perfect this traditional craft.

EMBROIDERY
Brazilian Embroidery: Summer Spray
— Christine Hause
Create beautiful three-dimensional Brazilian Embroidery. Use a variety of rayon threads to add stunning color to the small piece (8”round). The stitches are easy and fun to learn and include stem, couching, French knots, bullions, cast-ons, knotted lazy daisy and pistil stitches! These realistic flowers and foliage look like they are growing on your fabric and have attracted the butterfly. Kit will provide everything you need to get started, including beads and specialty threads. Bring small 6” embroidery hoop and scissors. KNITTING
Knitting for Beginners: Make a Scarf or Hat

Learn the basic components of knitting - cast on, knit, purl, cast off, increases and decreases. Discuss knitting abbreviations and conventions, how to read a pattern, and how to read a yarn label. Begin your project while working with an expert to help you.
You may purchase materials the first night of class or bring 200 yards of worsted weight yarn and size 8 knitting needles.

CHILDREN’S BOOKS
How to Write for Children and Young Adults
— Denise Vega
Are you working on a picture book or novel for children or young adults or do you have an idea for one? In this workshop with award-winning children's and young adult book author Denise Vega, evaluate what is currently published, understand picture book and novel structure, analyze existing works, and explore various writing techniques such as “show don’t tell.” If you have something you’re working on, bring it! The majority of this workshop focuses on good writing techniques for both picture books and novels, with some time at the end to discuss how to submit a manuscript for possible publication and other “getting published” topics. Note that this course does not cover self-publishing.
Denise Vega is a published, award-winning author and the Co-Regional Advisor for the Rocky Mountain Chapter of the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators. Her books include the young adult novels “CLICK HERE (To Find Out How I Survived Seventh Grade)” -a Colorado Book Award winner and bestseller for Scholastic Book Clubs and “Fact of Life #31”. Creative Nonfiction: Write Your Life
— Kathryn Winograd
Discover the tangled intersection of poetry, fiction, and memoir. Explore the transforming moments of your life and learn how to discover and share epiphany with an audience. Examine a variety of publishing venues in this workshop-style class.
Kathryn Winograd is the author of “Air Into Breath”, winner of the Colorado Book Award, and three nonfiction books on writing, published by Scholastic Inc. and McGraw Hill. She holds a MFA in Poetry from the University of Iowa and a Ph.D. in literature and creative writing from the University of Denver. Her poetry and nonfiction have been published in numerous national journals and magazines and has also published children’s poetry and stories. A faculty member for Arapahoe Community College, she is also on faculty for Ashland University’s low residency MFA program in Poetry and Creative Non Fiction.

POETRY
Poetry Writing
— Chris Ransick
What are the fifteen ways of being a poet? According to David Citino, they include poet as maker, as seer, as voyeur, and as one who blesses and curses. Join Denver Poet Laureate Chris Ransick in exploring the many ways we use poetry for expression. Along the way, visit Aristotle’s “Affective Theory of Art”, John Keats’ concept of negative capability, and Stanley Kunitz’s wonderful musings on becoming a friendly host to your subconscious. It’s a journey through language and the poetic arts you don’t want to miss.
Chris Ransick, MA, MFA: Denver’s Poet Laureate, author of “Never Summer: Poems from Thin Air”, co-winner of the 2003 Colorado Book Award in Poetry, “A Return to Emptiness”, a collection of short stories which was a finalist for the 2005 Colorado Book Award, and the newly released collection of poems, “Lost Songs and Last Chances”.
