Is Pluto a planet or not?
What does it feel like to fall into a black hole?
Is the Big Bang for real?

These and many more questions are answered in Astronomy courses at Arapahoe Community College.

On November 8, 2006 there was a “Transit of Mercury.” This happens when our solar system’s first planet crosses the face of the Sun and looks like a tiny black dot as it makes its transit. Because looking at this event without special equipment could cause you to go blind, Dave Trott of the ACC Astronomy Department set up a special telescope for viewing it safely.

Astronomy is often called the science for non-scientists. There are fascinating things to think about in Astronomy. Many people have looked up in silent awe at the stars and wondered where it all came from. If you are that kind of person, you will love Astronomy. This is a journey of the soul as well as the mind; a cosmic blend of art and science. You will learn a lot and you will have many questions answered. But, watch out, for every answer you will discover at least two new questions! Even if you are not aiming for a career in science, these classes will open your mind and give you a wonderful treasure you can keep for the rest of your life.

AST101 or AST102 are guaranteed to transfer to any state-supported school in Colorado. The Astronomy Department takes a learner centered approach and is committed to quality education in the area of Astronomy, incorporating the most current technology and educational methods. We operate sophisticated instruments that are not available at many four-year schools such as a hydrogen-alpha filter for viewing the Sun in breathtaking detail. We incorporate the latest interactive computer simulations to increase student involvement by making it fun to learn. Instructors incorporate collaborative team learning activities into the classes for real-world training and to build student interactivity.

Students achieve high levels of success and express great satisfaction with their learning experience in Astronomy classes at ACC. We hope you will sign up for one of our classes!
