Chair of the EMS Department: Jonathan Greenwald Criminal Background Checks for Health Care Students EMT Basic CertificateThe EMT-Basic program consists of EMS 125 (9 credit hours) and EMS 170 (1 credit hour) for a total of ten credit hours. These classes provide the basic education for an individual to become a State Certified EMT-Basic. Taking these two classes is the first step to getting into the field of EMS and becoming a paramedic. The EMT-Basic program provides the knowledge and skills required for the delivery of emergency care to the sick and injured patient. In order to apply to most Fire Departments in the State of Colorado, these two classes must be successfully completed. After completion, the student will need to take the National Registry EMT-Basic written examination. Upon successful completion of this written examination the student may then apply for Colorado State Certification as an EMT-B. EMS 125 classes meet ten hours and forty minutes per week, six hours and forty minutes of lecture and four hours of practical lab. There is also approximately 45 hours of clinical time, two 8-12 hour shifts in an emergency department, and two-three 8-12 hour shifts on a rescue unit (ambulance and fire rescue). EMT Basic Enhanced Program CertificateThis complete 27 hour EMS certificate program provides the necessary classes to broaden the student’s knowledge and skills for providing emergency medical services (EMS). This program also improves the student’s chances of getting work in the field of EMS and meets the academic requirements (prerequisites) for application to most paramedic programs. (In order to get into the ACC Paramedic Degree or Paramedic Certificate Program the student must have EMS 125, 170, 130, CCN 230, BIO 201 and 202 and take the HOBIT test. In addition, the student usually needs at least a year of EMS field experience.) The Enhanced Certificate Program is perfectly suited for the student who is interested in pursuing one of the following: Paramedic Certificate, AAS in Paramedicine, other healthcare professions (most emergency departments require at least IV and EKG certifications) and better employment opportunities. Our students achieve an excellent success rate on the National Registry Examination. The faculty includes experienced emergency medicine educators and experts in a variety of fields. The Paramedic Education Program is organized to provide the student with knowledge of the acute, critical changes in physiology, psychological and clinical symptoms as they pertain to the prehospital emergency medical care of the infant, child, adolescent, adult and geriatric patient. The student acquires clinical experience and practical skills related to the emergency medical care of these patients. Students are also presented with ethical and legal responsibilities that they assume as graduates. The Paramedic training is done through HealthONE EMS in Englewood.
