FRENCH 101 – CONVERSATION I
PREREQUISITE: None. This is a beginner class.
TEXTBOOK/ WORKBOOK / CDS
French In Action, the Capretz Method, 2nd edition, Yale University Press, includes Textbook / Workbook (part 1) and CDs to accompany the Workbook. The CDs are available at the Media Center for a $20.00 fee.
COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This is the first course in a sequence for beginning students who wish to understand and communicate in French. The material will include basic vocabulary, grammar, and expressions that are used in daily situations and travel.
French In Action is a multimedia course combining video, audio, and text to teach French language and culture by immersing the student in a French speaking world. As expected in a Conversational Course the emphasis will be on oral communication by developing oral and aural skills, self-expression as well as cultural insights.
COURSE OUTLINE:
During the semester the class will complete 8 chapters (leçon 2 to leçon 9 included,
leçon 1 is an introduction to the course). The students must complete the same number of chapters in their workbook using the CDs: the workbook is an important component of this course as it gives the students the opportunity to practice their comprehension skills outside of the class and to work on the language structure.
Assignments will include:
- oral skits during the course of each chapter to practice and assimilate the vocabulary, language structures, pronunciation and cultural behaviors.
- a comprehensive quiz including aural and written sections upon completion of each chapter
- a two parts oral final exam (an individual presentation and a dialog).
STUDENT COMPETENCIES: Upon completion of this course, students at the novice level should be able to:
- Comprehensibly reproduce the pronunciation and intonation of the language.
- Understand basic oral statements, instructions, and questions.
- Accurately apply vocabulary and learned phrases in simple oral expressions.
- Demonstrate knowledge of vocabulary and grammar in elementary interchanges.
- Employ comprehensible grammar in writing simple statements.
- Read and comprehend basic information
- Demonstrate an awareness of appropriate cultural behaviors in everyday situations.
FRENCH 102 – CONVERSATION II
PREREQUISITE:French Conversation I or instructor permission.

FRE 201 - CONVERSATION III
PREREQUISITE: French 102 or instructor permission.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This is the third course in a sequence for students who wish to continue their study for understanding and communicating in French. The material will include intermediate level vocabulary, grammar, and expressions used in daily situations and travel. French in Action is a multimedia course combining video, audio, and text to teach French language and culture by immersing the student in a French speaking world.
COURSE OUTLINE: The class will complete 8 chapters (leçon 18 to leçon 25). The students must complete the same number of chapters in their workbook using the CDs. The workbook is an important component of the course as it gives students the opportunity to practice listening comprehension skills outside of class and to work on the language structure.

FRE 202 - CONVERSATION IV
PREREQUISITE: French 201 or instructor permission.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This is the last course in a sequence for students who wish to continue their study for understanding and communicating in French. The material will continue to cover intermediate level conversational patterns, expressions, and grammar used in daily situations and travel. French in Action is a multimedia course combining video, audio, and text to teach French language and culture by immersing the student in a French speaking world.
COURSE OUTLINE: The class will complete 8 chapters (leçon 26 to leçon 32). The students must complete the same number of chapters in their workbook using the CDs. The workbook is an important part of the course as it gives students the opportunity to practice listening comprehension skills outside of class and to work on the language structure.

FRE 111 - FRENCH I
PREREQUISITE: None. This is a beginner class.
TEXT: HORIZONS, 4th edition, by Manley/ Smith/ McMinn & Prévost (Heinle Cengage Learning Publ.) packaged with audio CDs, and QUIA Online Workbook/Lab Manual.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: French I is the first course in a sequence that deals with the development of functional proficiency in listening, speaking, reading and writing French, and of cultural awareness.
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
- To provide the student with the opportunity to acquire basic knowledge of French grammar and syntax.
- To provide practice in basic aural, oral, reading and writing skills.
- To provide practice in simple translations (English/French – French/English).
- To provide the opportunity to learn about the culture of French speaking countries and their relationship to the American culture and to the world.
COURSE OUTLINE: The course will cover 6 chapters, Chapitre Préliminaire through Chapitre 5. Each chapter is made up of 4 Compétences, each based on a specific language function with vocabulary, structure, listening and reading comprehension, followed by a Lecture (Reading) et Composition section, and a Comparaisons Culturelles section which gives students the opportunity to compare same aspects of French and American cultures.
Assignments will include:
- 5 chapter tests
- a mid-term exam
- a final exam
- oral presentations or skits
- a cultural presentation (in English)
- QUIA online workbook/lab manual: students must work regularly and complete at least 70% of the activities for each chapter.
- Participation in a community learning activity of their choice.
* Section 301 is a hybrid section with part of the class work completed online.
STUDENT COMPETENCIES: Upon completion of this course, the student at the novice level should be able to:
- Reproduce comprehensibly the pronunciation and intonation of French.
- Understand basic oral statements, instructions and questions.

PREREQUISITE: French I or instructor permission.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: French II continues French I in the development of functional proficiency in listening, speaking, reading and writing French, and of cultural awareness.

FRE 211 - FRENCH LANGUAGE III
PREREQUISITE: French II or instructor approval.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: French III is a low-intermediate course which continues French I and II in the development of increased functional proficiency in listening, speaking, reading and writing French. This course provides students with the opportunity to examine, compare and contrast language systems and cultural attitudes and values.
COURSE OUTLINE:The course will cover Chapitres Préliminaire, 1, 2, and 3 of the Manuel de classe. The Manuel de Préparation is an important part of the course and must be completed alongside the textbook. Each chapter is divided in several segments dealing with the development of grammatical accuracy, communicative skills, and understanding of French and francophone cultures.
Assignments will include:
- chapter tests (3)
- compositions (3)
- oral presentations (3)
- a cumulative final exam
- a cultural research project.
COURSE OBJECTIVES: The course begins with a review of material studied in French I and II, and proceeds with new material in the areas of listening, speaking, reading, writing and culture. The course is intended to provide the students with more advanced knowledge of French grammar and syntax, with necessary skills for meaningful oral and written communication, and with an understanding of the interrelatedness of culture and language through the study of more advanced literary and articles selection.
STUDENT COMPETENCIES: Upon completion of this course, the student at the intermediate-low level should be able to:
- Use receptive listening skills – selective listening, sound discrimination, contextual clues, predicting, and global comprehension – to obtain meaning from conversations on everyday topics spoken.
- Initiate, comprehend, and maintain meaningful communication in predictable and familiar situations.
- Apply receptive reading skills – cognate recognition, contextual clues, inferring, skimming, and scanning – in the comprehension of selected texts, including literary selections.
- Apply critical and logical skills in the creation of written texts, such as analysis, synthesis, and evaluation, through written assignments that stress communication for specific audiences (formal/familiar)
- Compare, contrast, and reflect on some attitudes and values of French and francophone cultures and his/her own culture in relation to geographical, historical, cultural and linguistic aspects.
- Practice strategic skills to communicate meaningfully and appropriately with a selected audience in oral and written form.
- Demonstrate the ability to select and apply appropriate technology to solve problems or compile information in the study of the French language and culture.
FRE 212 - FRENCH LANGUAGE IV
PREREQUISITE: French III or instructor approval.

PREREQUISITE: French IV (FRE 212) or instructor permission
